Creatine monohydrate is one of the most studied supplements in sports nutrition and is widely recognized for its role in supporting physical performance. Researchers have also explored whether combining creatine with other ergogenic aids could enhance exercise outcomes even further.

A study published in Nutrients evaluated the effects of combining creatine monohydrate (CrM) with β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB), a metabolite of the amino acid leucine, on physical performance in elite athletes. Study Design

Elite male rowers participated in a 10-week training and supplementation program. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups:

  • A placebo group

  • A creatine monohydrate group

Performance Testing

In particular:

  • The combined supplement group performed better at the 8 mmol lactate threshold, a level often associated with sustained high-intensity efforts.

  • This suggests that the creatine + HMB group was able to exercise at a higher intensity before reaching this key metabolic marker.
